Department of Jazz & Contemporary Improvisation

The University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance announces that Kris Johnson will join the Department of Jazz & Contemporary Improvisation as an assistant professor in the fall of 2024. Johnson is an acclaimed trumpeter, composer, and educator originating from the city of Detroit. His portfolio encompasses music, film scores, musical theatre, and education.

A distinguished figure in the music community, Johnson’s resume includes collaborations on six Grammy-nominated albums. Notably, his arrangement contributions to the Count Basie Orchestra’s Basie Swings the Blues earned him acclaim, culminating in a coveted Grammy win for Best Large Jazz Ensemble at the 66th Annual Grammy Awards in 2024.

Designed for students who wish to become composers and/or pursue academic careers, this degree teaches time-honored techniques and developing new innovations. Students will learn to compose for various ensembles and instruments and styles, both traditional and non-traditional, the practical aspects of their craft, and also expand their aesthetic awareness to reach beyond these aspects. Collaboration is encouraged. Weekly seminars provide opportunities for sharing of community insights. Applicants should have an extensive background in piano or another instrument/voice and evidence of creative capacity in composition.
